Short Course in Islamic Calligraphy Part 1

When: Saturdays, 20th October 2012 – 10th November 2012

Where: The Prince’s School for Traditional Arts, Charlotte Road, London

This course introduces students to the methods and materials used in traditional Islamic calligraphy. Students will learn how to prepare their own reed pen and sized paper. They will then experience writing the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie these letters. The course includes studying the different applications of calligraphy in the arts and crafts of the Islamic world, and concludes with each participant making a final piece.

When: 10th September 2012 – 14th September 2012
Time: 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
Where: The Prince's School for Traditional Arts, Charlotte Road, London

Following on from the previous course, students will continue their practice deepening their understanding of the letterforms. They will learn traditional techniques on how to mount and present their work. The course includes a visit to one of London's best Islamic calligraphy collections. Some previous experience of Islamic calligraphy is required for this course.

Islamic Calligraphy Istanbul Study Tour

When: 30th August 2012 – 2nd September 2012

Where: Istanbul, Turkey

his summer, Art of the Pen will be hosting a four-day Islamic calligraphy study tour to the calligraphy capital of the world, Istanbul, Turkey. Calligraphy lovers will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the art, to follow in the footsteps of the illustrious calligraphers of the past and to learn from distinguished masters of the present.

The programme will include daily one-to-one sessions in Islamic calligraphy, tours with local specialist and renowned calligrapher Efdaluddin Kilic, a visit to a Master calligrapher’s atelier and a rare opportunity to witness a calligrapher’s ijazah ceremony. Classes will be held in the historic and beautiful quarter of Old Istanbul, Sultanahmet.

Fee: £300, includes visits to various locations around Istanbul.

Note: The fee does not include flights or accommodation.

We are able to provide accommodation if requested at an additional cost.

Introductory Islamic Calligraphy Course part 1

A week-long course led by a professional practitioner of the art. This course

introduces students to the methods and materials used in traditional Islamic calligraphy. Students will learn how to prepare their own reed pen and sized paper. They will practice writing the letters of the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie these forms in various styles of script.

We will consider the historical development of the art form and its various applications today. The course concludes with each participant making a final piece.

Fee: £300 (includes materials)

Places are very limited, 50% deposit required in advance.
